FIBONACCI PROJECT

The Fibonacci Project is a show in constant evolution realized through a series of creation residencies in different countries around the world.

Ambitious initiative of international collaboration, the Fibonacci Project is driven by the belief that through artistic expression we can build bridges between cultures and promote a greater sense of solidarity. The objective of the project is the creation of a multidisciplinary show based on collaborations between artists from different cultures. The project’s name refers to the famous Fibonacci sequence discovered by Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci in the early 13th century.
{0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21…}
This sequence which produces the Golden Number is the red thread of the whole project…

  • Mexico - February 2007

Summer 2005, Samuel Tétreault (co-founder of Les 7 Doigts de la Main and initiator of the Fibonacci Project) and Andrea Pelaez (artistic director of the Mexican contemporary circus company Cirko De Mente) began the discussions for the very first creation residency of the Fibonacci Project. Nearly two years later, after strenuous bi-national efforts to gather the necessary funding and support, the very first creation residency was held in February 2007 at the Centro National de las Artes in Mexico City. This first residency was intense and magical… over twenty artists from Canada and Mexico collaborated together with only eleven days of creation! Yet the resulting “work in progress”, a full ninety-minutes show, was presented three times to sold-out audiences and received rave reviews. The Fibonacci Project was officially born!

  • Igloolik - June 2008

Following the success of the 1st residency, plans for an “Inuit – Canadian – Mexican Trilogy” were established with Guillaume Saladin (director of Artcirq, an Inuit circus company) and Cirko De Mente. In June 2008, The Fibonacci Project took off for a creation residency in Artcirq’s hometown, Igloolik, a small Inuit community located near the north end of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic territory of Nunavut. Six Montreal-based artists of Les 7 Doigts de la Main and five Mexican artists of Cirko De Mente met up with a dozen artists from Artcirq. After an incredible hunting excursion on Baffin Island and a mere two-weeks creation period, the acrobats, musicians and actors presented the fruits of this residency to mesmerized audiences, holding performances in Igloolik as well as in Iqaluit (capital of Nunavut) and in Kuujjuaq (located in the north of Quebec).

  • Montreal - July 2008

Continuing a journey initiated in the Canadian Greath North, the artists from Artcirq, Cirko De Mente and Les 7 Doigts de la main joined in Montreal at La TOHU (Cité des Arts du Cirque) for the second residency of their trilogy together. During two weeks, deepening their artistic sharing and cultural understanding of eachother, they collaborated to present three performances of yet another unique edition of the Fibonacci Project.
The Montreal audiences were moved by the spirit of collaboration and the simple beauty of the show and felt privileged to be part of this extraordinary multicultural encounter between Inuit, Mexican and Canadian artists.

  • Veracruz - February 2009

To complete the trilogy planned between the Inuit, Mexican and Canadian artists, the Fibonacci Project traveled to Veracruz for a two weeks creation residency at the Centro Veracruzano de las Artes. Before the beginning of this third and ultimate residency together, the artists attended the famous “Candelaria Festival” in Tlacotalpan on February 1st, where they stayed awake all night, sharing an authentic mexican experience. Then, after two weeks of hard work, they presented three permormances of the final result of their collaboration to the local public before returning to Mexico City where the trilogy culminated with three acclaimed performances at the prestigious Teatro de la Ciudad.

  • Copenhagen - Nov/Dec 2009

After encounters with the Inuit and Mexican cultures, the Fibonacci Project traveled to the other side of the Atlantic for the first time and ventured into Scandinavian territory upon an invitation from the Republique theater in Copenhagen. With this residency the Fibonacci Project started refining its recurring concepts and creation parameters. The time allowed for creation went from 2 weeks to 3 weeks thus allowing to deepen the artistic work. The collaboration between the Danish artists and Les 7 Doigts de la Main opened the project to new horizons. The resulting show was presented three times at Republique and left the Copenhagen audiences wanting more… Plans are made for the project to return at Republique in 2011.

  • Barcelona - November 2010

Strenghtened by the meetings with the Inuit, Mexican and Danish cultures, the Fibonacci Project Barcelona edition proposed a collaboration with Catalan/Spanish artists. Over 75 candidates responded to the casting call and a total of 12 artists were chosen. The experiences aquired from the previous residencies along with a new creation guidebook handled to all participants allowed for the greatest creation process so far. The 3 weeks residency was held in the big top of La Central del Circ, hosting the project in partnership with Mercat de les Flors. For the first time of its history the project was presented in a circus tent. The show created was amazing and the four presentations ended up selling out to enraptured audiences. The Barcelona edition took the Fibonacci Project to new heights!

  • Copenhagen - April-June 2011

On April 26th 2011 the Fibonacci Project will return to the Republique theater in Copenhagen for another creation residency of three weeks but this time followed by a whole month of performances. During the residency 8 Canadian artists will collaborate with over a dozen Scandinavian artists to create a
complete and unique show based on the recurring structures and guidelines developed for the Fibonacci project over the course of the previous residencies.

The artists : Kajsa Bohlin, Louise Hyun Dahi, Dominic Desrochers, Geneviève Drolet, Andreas Falk, Dino Giancola, Henriette Groth, Charmaine Leblanc, Scott “Mc Jabber” Martingell, Kaleen Mc Keeman, Sindri Runudde, Sandy Silva, Anders Skat, Samuel Tétreault, Luis Sartori do Vale

In only 21 days Republique and the Canadian new circus company, Les 7 doigts de la main, have created an amazing performance that is completely its own and much more than a bunch of exceptional circus tricks. Everything, the lighting, the music, the theme and the artists blend into a harmonic whole and as an audience you are left speechless and moved.
