Connecting performing arts and creative technologies
NOVEMBER 7 2024

Overview

At first glance a paradox to some, the union between performing arts and technological creation is giving birth to strong and meaningful works, moving audiences in different ways.

Inspiring while expanding creative boundaries, this paradox drives us forward, broadens creative possibilities and opens new spaces for expression.

Forum LAB7 creates a unique space, for performing arts and multimedia professionals, to share experiences, challenges, tips and, especially, a desire to tell stories with something new.

Let’s build together a connection between technology and performing arts in a way that truly is us!

Schedule

Thursday, november 7th

ARTISTIC DEMO
Èbe
Learn more

Èbe, which means the ebbing tide, is a choreographic work which features a choir of robot accordions and a choreography rooted in flamenco to explore the communicational dimension of breathing. Èbe invites the audience to explore the deep connections between man, machine and nature, creating a shared experience where the language of flamenco, music and robotics merge into a single artistic expression. Sensory, contemplative and reminiscent of the hypnotizing effect of the sea, Èbe draws its inspiration from the cyclical and vital phenomenon of the tides to reveal the power of what surpasses us and guides us, beyond our individual questions. Presented in theaters and in situ mode more than 25 times in Canada and abroad, Èbe is the result of an artistic collaboration with Patrick Saint-Denis (robotic and audio art). A first 30-minute version was presented in 2018 in Montreal (Tangente, S.A.T.), then a one-hour version as well as an in situ version were created with performer and co-creator Olivier Arseneault. Èbe has continued to travel ever since, both locally and internationally.

In the virtual reality experience Messis, the visitor, immersed in a circle of nine dancers, is plunged into the heart of a sacrificial ritual.

This choreography is taken from the Messis web series, launched in 2022 on an interactive platform of the same name offering access to the behind-the-scenes of the creation process and the reflections that inspired the work. Messis offers viewers a glimpse into a near future where, in the face of nature’s destruction and the physical isolation of individuals caused by waves of pandemics, a new generation of humans seeks connection, meaning, and intimacy through a sacrificial ritual that allows them to enter the metaverse. The title Messis, meaning "harvest" in Latin, refers to the data collection inherent in the continuous expansion of the metaverse and the immense power of technology, the true "messiah" of our time.

Rooted in a reflection on the future of the body and humanity, in a context of social and technological upheaval accelerated by the pandemic, Messis celebrates the reconnection to the earth and the exultation of the physical body.

Learn more

Amid the global migration between physical and virtual worlds, L'Entrée (The Opening) delves into the desire to capture, understand, and keep unchanged the vital human body. Equal parts audio poem, 3D-printed sculpture exhibition, and augmented reality (AR) experience, L’Entrée reveals virtual sculptures situated in pedestrianized areas humming with human movement.

The sculptures, created in a gaming engine with photogrammetry, motion capture, and computational averaging, each perform a virtual “dance,” immersing viewers in their unique forms. Spatial sound pulls listeners between their tangible environment and the intangible world of XR technology, ultimately begging the question: what is the purpose of the human body in an increasingly virtual existence?

L’Entrée is created by movement artist and programmer Lisa Jamhoury.
It features movement by Françoise Voranger and Andrea (Nikki) Ortiz of Hybrid Movement Company, and music and sound by Matt McCorkle

Sarah Bronsard
Choreographer and multidisciplinary artist
Learn more

Sarah Bronsard is a choreographer and multidisciplinary artist based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. She finds her most fertile ground in flamenco dance and on the contemporary dance scene, after an artistic journey including music, glass blowing, digital arts and a career as a painter. In her projects, she is interested in the fertile tension of the “between” which reveals itself between bodily states, between beings, between artistic disciplines and between traditions. She prioritizes co-creations with artists of diverse practices; settling into this space “between” requires mutual listening and a surrender to instability which allows to find a new and fertile balance together. Her choreographic projects have been presented in Canada, Europe (France, Wales, Italy, Netherlands), Morocco and Japan. In spring 2024, she presents L’écho des racines a choreography combining flamenco and Quebec step dancing in the company of eight musicians and dancers, as well as Les Rigoles, a co-creation with the singer Alexandra Templier around the laughter phenomenon.
